My DIY Solution
How I use VoIP as a real small business owner.
My goal was not to build a fancy enterprise phone system. I wanted practical freedom: multiple business numbers, lower costs, call routing, softphones, desk phones, and the ability to answer from wherever I am.
I use internet-based phone tools to route calls from different businesses to the same phone when needed. A softphone app lets me keep work and personal calls separated while still carrying one mobile device.
When I am camping or traveling, I do not usually bring a regular IP desk phone because it takes more power and adds more gear. A softphone on my existing phone is usually the better fit. With Starlink or cellular data, the business phone can still be part of my mobile office.
- Business numbers can route to mobile softphones.
- Desk phones can still be used in the office.
- Calls can transfer internally to other extensions.
- SMS can often be handled from the same business number.
- The whole setup can be changed without waiting on a traditional phone company.
My office is wherever my phone can connect.
